Gnomoria vs dwarf fortress10/31/2023 ![]() Nearby groups, and other types of reactions and experiences you are describing could be developed without requiring a world. If you approach DF from the fortress aspect then other than placing your fortress starting location, the fact there is a generated world does not make a big difference. If you approach DF from the adventure aspect having the world and history makes a lot of sense. Gnomoria was clearly inspired by the Fortress aspect. ![]() On the other hand it is an adventure rogue-like game inspired by games like Rogue, Nethack, Moria, and Angband. On one hand it is a Fortress building game which was inspired by the likes of Dungeon Keeper, Evil Genius, etc. I sometimes say it has multiple personalities. They are 6 years behind DF.ĮDIT: I like looking at the world map and picking my spot in DF. I kind of doubt they will do that, but you never know. Some things it could have the same outcome without actually developing the entire world and back history. I seriously doubt it would do everything DF does, as some of those things would not make sense with Gnomoria. At the moment (though subject to change) Gnomoria seems to have greater development velocity (so to speak). Compared to how much has been done with Gnomoria in its development time. DF has been in development for a very long time. I don't see Gnomoria as not being in a position to accomplish similar. You could go on listing the depth of DF and its crazy attention to detail for a very long time. Yep, that could be pretty easily accomplished without needing to generate the entire world. After my fortresses fell I would look at the history to see the accomplishments of the fortress. Originally posted by skyte100:Oh yeah I also forgot that DF also generates history that records what your fortress did. This wont affect the normal player at all but I liked that aspect of DF. There is no world to speak of beyond the base and interaction with the world beyond your base is limited to immigration, trading, and invasions. ![]() If your nation goes to war with another nation your fortress may start getting attacked by that nation. Your nation can go to war with the elves because you pissed them off and that war stays with that nation even after the fortress falls. Your fortress can become the capital, you can influence relations with other races. Even in Fortress mode you influence the rest of the world. The entire world really only matters in DF when you are playing in Adventure mode. Apart from selecting the location for your base in Dwarf Fortress you don't really use the fact an entire world was generated in fortress mode. Originally posted by skyte100:Unfortunately it doesnt seem to generate an entire world the way DF does.Īnd this matters why? It has no adventure mode. Why? They will likely focus on one of those personalities rather than both of them. It is already doing a really good job when you compare the development time put into Gnomoria vs Dwarf Fortress.ĭwarf Fortress has multiple personalities, and for that reason it is unlikely a single game will ever catch up. That is if it keeps up its current progress. I do see it catching up and eventually maybe passing the Fortress side of things. It would be wasted effort for something you'd never really see in the game. I don't see why Gnomoria would ever seek to catch up on the history and lore of the world. All of that stuff does come into play if you play in Adventure mode which is more like a suped up version of Rogue/Angband. It generates all of the lore, and world and such that you really don't deal with when playing in fortress mode other than when you are deciding where to place your fortress. In reality though, Dwarf Fortress is more than one game. A team of developers could catch up pretty quickly. So, a really dedicated developer could catch up. It would be tough, but Toady One does not develop as fast as it may seem. ![]() I don't think any game could reach the level of complexity DF has reached at this point. I've played it so often all I see ,when I stare into the ASCII landscape, are luscious plains, lush forests, towering mountains, delicate caverns and so on and so fa.
